Quito: In May, two jaguars were found caged in a deserted farm in the South American country of Ecuador. It was evidence of a growing trend among Ecuador’s drug mafia bosses. They are building private zoos like Pablo Escobar, the Colombian mafia boss who once shook the world.
The Jaguars were seized from the property of Wilder Sanchez Farfán, a mafia boss wanted by the US and believed to be linked to the Jalisco New Generation cartel in Mexico. He was arrested by Colombian police in February. Apart from jaguars, the authorities also found exotic birds imported from China and South Korea, including parrots. Animals like turtles and snakes were also found to be widely trafficked.
In 2022, more than 6,800 wildlife were caught illegally being trafficked, and in 2021, more than 6,000 wildlife were caught by the Ecuadorian police. Most of the cases are related to drug mafia gangs.
Pablo Escobar was a drug lord who controlled the United States and Latin American countries. Escobar, who became the kingpin of cocaine and became the apple of the eye of the government, was also the idol of a section of the population in Colombia.
Escobar kept hippos brought from Africa in his private zoo at Hacienda Naples, a luxury estate in Porto Triunfo, 100 km from Medellin, Colombia.
After Escobar was killed in 1993, the Colombian authorities confiscated the estate and the zoo. Flamingo, Kangaroo, Zebra, Giraffe etc. which were in the zoo have been shifted by the authorities to other zoos. But the hippos were left behind. Their generation of hippos multiplied. Today, they regularly attack people along the Magdalena River. Ecuadorian authorities believe that other mafia bosses following Escobar’s lead in running zoos will have a negative impact on the environment.
