Diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, menopause, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia and other diseases are diseases that are diagnosed and treated by endocrinologists. According to the World Health Organization – WHO – non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are among the most common and deadly in the world, so the role of these medical professionals is becoming increasingly necessary for the timely prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these pathologies.

“We are facing a social challenge that requires the support of governments and institutions to ensure that the population has access to better quality food and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits is encouraged. Today more people realize the importance of taking care of their health; however, this is not a priority for the population and is only relevant when the disease is diagnosed, if there is any pain or complication. Remarkably, diseases such as diabetes, if not properly controlled, kill more people than all types of cancer and AIDS combined. We normalize overweight, obesity and diabetes, diseases that can cause kidney problems, heart attacks, cerebrovascular accidents and even amputations, ”comments Dr. Enrique Caballero, endocrinologist and director of international programs at Harvard University.

While endocrinology deals with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, thyroid disease, hormonal imbalance, menopause, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, lipid disorders, and infertility, the first two require more attention from these professionals.

“60% of patients treated by an endocrinologist in Colombia suffer from diabetes, 20% from obesity, 20% from thyroid disease and other types of diseases. The largest cities with the highest population density are areas where diseases such as diabetes and obesity are most prevalent. In Bogotá, Medellin and Cali, eating habits have changed, stress levels have become higher, lifestyles have become more sedentary, while in rural areas people are able to eat healthier food because they have less access to “unhealthy” food and are more physically active,” says Dr. Henry Tovar, endocrinologist and former president of the Colombian Association of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been changes in lifestyle habits, mainly due to lack of physical activity and an unbalanced diet due to the consumption of ultra-processed foods, as well as emotional and sleep disturbances. According to Dr. Oscar Rosero, endocrinologist, member of the Columbia Association of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, “We have broken our humanity in terms of our healthy lifestyle habits. At some point, we were aware of the need to take care of our health, but in the end, we went back and worsened the way we eat and take care of ourselves.

This specialty is experiencing its best period in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, obesity and other pathologies that this branch of medicine focuses on. There is now a wealth of knowledge, drugs and devices that, in addition to improving and controlling the health of patients, allow them to have a better quality of life. Similarly, tools such as artificial intelligence are being used to prevent disease and promote community care initiatives.

“Endocrinology has advanced a lot and the Covid-19 pandemic has spurred us to continue using technology to diagnose, monitor and treat patients. Today we have self-monitoring of glucose levels, remote patient management, apps that allow us to better track our medication intake, that allow us to monitor weight and vital signs. Of course, technology is being applied to improve medicines and increase the level of knowledge available to healthcare professionals,” emphasizes Dr. Catherine Restrepo Erazo, President of the Colombian Association of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.

July 24 is the National Day of the Endocrinologist, which brings together more than 350 medical professionals in the country who, thanks to their knowledge, research and medical practice, diagnose and treat patients with diseases of the endocrine system.
