capital of the Colombian department of Antioquia

Medellin is the capital of the department of Antioquia, located in the northwestern part of Colombia, in the center of the Aburrá Valley and on the banks of the Medellin River. According to data from the 2005 census, it has a population of 2,223,078, making it the second most populated city in Colombia. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Area, which makes up the city and 9 other municipalities, has a population of 3 312 165 inhabitants, this being the second urban agglomeration in Colombia.

Panoramic of Medellín.

As the capital of the department, Medellin houses the main state offices; in the economic sphere, it is one of the main financial and industrial centers in Colombia, home to many national and transnational companies.

The city is also one of the most prominent cultural centers in Colombia. It is home to important festivals with a wide international background and recognition. Academic and scientific activities also stand out, as some of the most important Colombian universities are based in Medellin.

Understand

Location

Medellin is located in the central mountain range in the Aburrá Valley, a valley that forms the Medellin River near its source. Medellin is surrounded by 8 neighboring municipalities with which it forms the Metropolitan Area [1]. These other municipalities are: Beauty, Itaguí, Envigado, Sabaneta, La Estrella, Caldas, Copacabana, Girardota and Barbosa. The city is a real conglomerate in which it is difficult to separate the boundaries of each municipality. To the east of the city is the Rionegro Valley [2], which is larger and higher in the mountains. This is where important industries, suburbs, rest areas, as well as the international airport are located.

temperatures at °F ・ total precipitation in inches

It's located 1,500 meters above sea level and the weather is very pleasant so it's called the Eternal Spring City. The average temperature is 22°C (between 14 and 30°C) and the moisture is moderate. There is no change in seasons. Dressing is easy, just a shirt and trousers, or skirt for women: seldom require a coat and sweater, and very rarely wear shorts or 'Bermuda-type pants'. The tie and formal dress are only used for business or special parties.

Due to the pleasant climate, many places like bars and restaurants are open or with terraces.

By train

By Car

The main access roads are the Southern Highway, which receives traffic from Sabaneta, Envigado and the Coffee Axis; and the Northern Highway, which receives traffic from the Caribbean coast and the Medellin-Bogotá Highway.

By bus

All passenger buses entering or leaving Medellin do so at one of its two transport terminals [14]:

  • North Transport Terminal: It is located in the north-western part of the city, in the Caribbean neighborhood (accessible via the Caribe station of Medellin Metro). It provides bus services to the eastern and northern areas of Antioquia: Bogotá, Tunja, the Santander Department, and the main cities of Colombia's Caribbean Coast: Cartagena de Indias, Barranquilla, Santa Marta, Sincelejo, Montería and others.
  • South Transport Terminal: located in the southwestern part of the city, in the Guayabal neighborhood. It is close but not directly accessible to Poblado station in Medellín Metro. It provides bus services to the south of Antioquia, also to the Eastern Antioquia, to the main cities of the Coffee Axis such as Manizales, Pereira and Armenia, to the Department of Tolima and to the main cities of southern Colombia such as Cali, Ibagué, Neiva, Popayán and Pasto.

Scroll

In meter

The Medellin Metro is the mass transportation system of the Metropolitan Area of Medellin. The Line A, which operates in the North-South sense, serves the municipalities of Bello, Medellin, Envigado and Itagüí and has 19 stations. Line B has 6 stations and runs through the city from the center to the West. All subway lines are on ground level or elevated, so they become perfect platforms to get to know the city by bird's eye. The stations are air-conditioned, well-lit and safe. The trains are kept very clean and are the pride of the city.

The Metro also integrates with the following transport systems (no additional payment is required for the metrocables or Metrobus):

  • Metrocable (Northeastern Zone, K Metro Line) - Modern cable car system, which serve to access the steep sectors of northeastern Medellín, it consists of three stations (Andalusia, El Popular and Santo Domingo Savio) to get to known neighborhoods of the city like Manrique, Campo Valdéz, Andalucia-La Francia, Popular 1 and 2, Santo Domingo Savio Llanaditas, among others. From its last station, you can get to the tourist Metrocable to Arvi Park (line L).
  • Metrocable (Western Zone, Line J of the Metro) - Opened in 2008, reaches the steepest sectors of San Javier, Vallejuelos and La Aurora.
  • Metrocable Line L that takes you from Santo Domingo Station to Arvi Park. Opened in February 2010, it has an additional cost to the Metro (Adults 3,500 COPs, children under 1 meter tall travel for free) and leads to the new Ecopark located at the top of the mountain, with beautiful view, temperate climate, lagoons, forests, etc.
  • Metrosit - A system of buses that cover routes close to Metro stations. They can easily be recognized for their green color with yellow letters. They cover routes to Barbosa, Copacabana, Bello, Envigado, Itagüí and San Antonio de Prado.
  • Metroplus - Articulated Bus System opened in December 2011, resembles the TransMilenio in Bogotá D.C. and the other 5 similar systems in the other large cities of the country. Buses are green and have 32 stations. There is free transfer to the metro (Civic Card only) at Cisneros and Hospital stations. [15]

The Metro and Metrocable tickets are available for both systems at no additional cost, and the Metrosit tickets are charged extra. All are purchased at Metro stations and cost 1,800 COPs for a single trip. There are multi-travel tickets with lower costs. However, if you're going to be in Medellin for long periods of time (months), the best option is to buy a Civic Card, a smart card, which, through an electromagnetic induction system, allows you to access stations much faster, as well as offering a cheaper fare for users.

On Bus

There is a private urban bus system in the city that serves every district or area of the city, which has been structured since 2008 in the so-called SIT, Integrated Transportation System, a project that is already underway that will integrate the urban bus service with the metro and the new Metroplús system, which is being completed. The cost of a ride is approximately $1,400 pesos and in all cases it is paid directly in cash to the bus driver.

By taxi

There are numerous taxi companies covering the entire metropolitan area, including some with bilingual English-Spanish services. Taxi ordering service by phone is the most usual and safe (some companies' phones are easy to memorize: 222 222, 0 333 3333). Some companies provide intermunicipal services and even José María Córdova airport, which can be reached by this means in 45 minutes at a typical cost of COP 60,000. In addition, collective taxi services are common; some of these collectives can be comfortable and fast, although they are often subject to the full quota. All taxis have a meter indicating the amount to be paid for the journey. The cost of a minimum race is COP 4,500 and a typical race in the city ranges from COP 7,000 to $10,000.

Car rental

Several companies are available. The largest one is Localiza [16] with headquarters at the international airport and in the neighborhood El Poblado.

Eat

The most representative dish of Antioquia and by extension of Medellin is without a doubt the Paisa Tray, available in almost all the restaurants of local cuisine. It is composed of beans, rice, egg, ripe slices, homemade potatoes, ground meat, avocado and chorizo; guarapo (sugar cane juice with lemon) is used as an accompanying drink, although a soda or juice also complement it properly. For dessert, you should try the milky or the mazamorra with milk and ground panela. It's a high-caloric dish, so it's good to plan a rest after eating it, but it's delicious and definitely something you can't stop trying.
